Program Focus:

This program will focus on the effective identification and management of a child or adolescent presenting the symptoms and features of Oppositional Defiant Disorder or a similar condition or concern.

Program Benefits:

This program will improve participants' ability to:

bullet

Identify a continuum of emotional and behavioral characteristics attributed to Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

bullet

Help an ODD youngster effectively redirect behaviors that are damaging their functioning and their future.

bullet

Provide parents and educators with proven strategies for realizing long-term improvement in this child's behavior.

Intended Audience of this Program:

This program will assist practitioners, clinicians, counselors, social workers and therapists in working more effectively with ODD youngsters and their families. Special education, "at-risk," inclusion, Alternative Education and "504" teachers and administrators should also benefit from the content of this program.

Needs Addressed by this Program:

Why is it that ODD youngsters engage in behaviors that mostly hurt themselves ... and do it over and over again?

Why is it that typical interventions, such as more and stronger consequences, generally fail?

Why is it this child seems to gain so much strength from our frustration and anger?

What DO we do with this youngster?

This program will offer insights and ideas in answer these questions ... and more.

Program Description:

The oppositional, defiant and noncompliant child or adolescent is hands down one of the most difficult youngsters to serve therapeutically. The behaviors this youngster can present at home and at school essentially defy conventional wisdom and tactics.

This program will take a look at current "best practice" ideas and strategies for managing and treating the youngster diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

This program includes lecture and activities.

Program Objectives:

Through this workshop and materials, participants will be able to:

1. Target a dozen behaviors most associated with defiance, oppositionality and noncompliance.

2. Identify three specific conditions that constitute a formal diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

3. Consider the intensity of adult reactions to this youngster's behavior, and how it affects all who work with this child.

4. Address critical assessment issues quickly upon referral.

5. Determine levels of exacerbation and comorbidity of ODD behaviors.

6. Assess the "total cost" of intervention and everyone's willingness (or not) to pay it.

7. Gain effective skills of counseling or psychotherapy with this child.

8. Learn current philosophies and practices regarding the use of psychoactive medications.

9. Help parents implement ten effective strategies for behavioral intervention at home.

10. Offer a dozen viable interventions for use in the most difficult compliance environment at all --- school.

11. Suggest a progression of alternatives when it becomes necessary to "get tougher" with the ODD youngster.
